Why Are You Single?

If you are single, you hate this question. With so many ways to meet singles these days, it surprises me that I still hear people say “You use a dating service on the Internet?” or “You met your boyfriend/girlfriend on the Internet?” It is 2007 people! The Internet is a valuable tool, I could not personally live without the ability to do the following on the Internet:

1. Internet banking, to check my balances, transfer money, or send email money transfers

2. Research my family name. I attended a family reunion which I found on the Net, and found relatives of my husband that we never knew about.

3. Posting information on websites like Facebook. Find long lost friends, exchange photos, find people from school on Classmates.com

4. Upload photos to Flikr to share with friends, and to keep them safe in case I lose my hard drive (again)

5. Talk to friends, family and business associates for free on Skype

6. Learn how to build a website, programming, learn marketing, long distance learning, even learn how to play the guitar.

7. Download songs to my iPOD, where would I be without my iPOD?

8. Find directions and map my journey through mapquest.com

So what is wrong with finding a date online? Online dating has been around for over 10 years now. Internet dating has become the most popular way to meet single people, and there are so many different niche dating sites to use. You can find black singles, asian singles, BBW, Canadian only, or seniors. You can find people with similar interests such as golfing singles, travel singles, as well as dog and cat lovers. If you consider the time it would take to talk to all of these singles, never mind find them out there in the real world, you will see why Internet Dating is the way to go. As a single young woman, I find myself in the dating arena fairly often and despite all the calls to arms for equality, I’m always most struck by the men who retain that oh-so-desirable and yet oh-so-elusive quality of gentlemanliness.

Here are 5 ways to be a gentleman on a date without being labeled a Neanderthal;

1. Pick Her Up. Whether you’re on your bike, walking, taking the subway, riding in a cab or being chauffeured in a limousine – pick her up. It’s a nice thing to do. If she’d rather meet you and is fairly insistent on it, then it may be, like with a blind date, that she’s not yet at a comfort level where she’d like you at her home. You should respect that wish.

2. Have a Plan Beforehand. Nothing is worse than sitting around trying to decide what to do. If you’re having trouble, flip through the paper’s restaurant reviews, pick one and make a reservation. Simple as that.

3. Tell Her How Nice She Looks. The words “you look lovely” or anything along those lines should be out of your mouth within the first five minutes of a date. No excuses.

4. Open Doors. Open her car door and the restaurant door, but don’t pull her chair out unless she is clearly standing by it and waiting for you to do so. Otherwise, if she’s not expecting it, you could wind up in an awkward chair struggle.

5. Pay, or At Least Try to Pay. Most women will admire and respect your offer to pay. If she offers to help pay, insist again but do not get into a struggle over the bill. If your date is very insistent on paying her share then let her do so, but at least try first. Also, if you were the one that asked her out, you should never expect her to pay.

Rather, anytime you approach a woman, be sure to indirectly communicate to her that you are the one qualifying her and that it is not the other way around.

The art of qualifying is an important technique to master as this will make you much more attractive to her. Remember, though, that you should not waste your time on women who do not meet you criteria regardless of how attractive they are.

Avoid One-Way Conversations. Another good dating tip is to avoid a one-way conversation with a woman. If you find that you are talking to a woman and you are carrying the bulk of the conversation, you need to move on. That men need to entertain women to build attraction is a myth.

A sign of a good, balanced women is one that desires an engaging conversation and does her part of contribute. If you are conversing with a woman but she is only giving one word answers, it is a good sign that you probably need to move on.

Ask with Confidence. How you ask for a woman’s phone number is very important, and it is not all about “what” you say. When the time comes and you want to ask for her number, be sure to do so with confidence.

Avoid the request coming across as purely an inquiry on your part, but rather look her in the eye and ask with an attitude of expectation. She will have no choice but to respond by giving you her number and contact information. Use this approach anytime you as for something.

Forget about Rejection. Many men do not approach women because they are afraid of rejection and, when it happens, they take it personally. They think her lack of interest is a reflection on them, who they are and what they have to offer a woman. This is very much not the case, as it is rarely a personal matter.

Fortunately, social skills are something that any man can learn and they are important skills to fine-tune. When I hear this, the most obvious thing it tells me is that he has not practiced enough. The fastest way to overcome this is to simply talk to everyone you come across.

Talk to the person next to you at the restaurant or bar. Talk to your classmate. Talk to your professor after class. Talk to the cashier, valet or waiter. You get my point. Basically, talk to everyone you meet including both men and women. This is one dating tip that has been proven time and time again as the best way to become more comfortable and confident in conversation skills.

Never Seek a Woman’s Approval. As a single man trying to meet women, you should never outwardly seek a woman’s approval. This should come naturally. Never try to impress a woman with your car, your job or expensive tastes. It also means you should never buy a stranger a drink. One woman said it best when she said she wants a “nice guy with an edge.”
