Love Is Like A Virus On The Loose

love is like a virus. It is not something that we choose or possess any modicum of control over. it is something that just happens: a growing organism that takes over our brains and insidiously robs us of our reason. Which is wonderful and great when that love is returned, but soul destroying when it is not. Love can inspire great acts of beauty, courage and sacrifice. It can also inspire hatred, jealousy and murder. It can drive us or destroy us, but it is never something over which we have complete control.

Love can be silent, verbose or expressed in the simplest terms. I once received a text message from someone that read blank. When asked to explain the sender said that he missed me so much he couldn’t speak. It was a joke, but was still something I treasured: a blank text message. However, the greatest love stories ever told do not obsess about love unrequited, but love returned. Hardly surprising is it, if people are looking for a happy ending.

There are also those who claim to love one another but inflict terrible pain on their partners, like the man who killed his beloved wife because he believed she had been unfaithful. Love does not always make us better people: it often brings out our insecurities even more. It can hurt as much as it helps.

I’m not a pessimist, just somebody who has witnessed the many sides of love. For each person happily in love there are no doubt twice as many made miserable by it.
